Lost SIM: What You Should Do
Act quickly to reduce the risk of misuse of your number and accounts.
Immediate steps
- Block the SIM via operator helpline, app, or another phone—do this as soon as possible.
- Note the time of loss and any last known location of the handset.
- If the handset was stolen, consider a police report (useful for formal processes).
Blocking and replacement
Operators can block a lost SIM and issue a replacement SIM for the same number after identity verification. You will usually need original CNIC and biometric confirmation at an authorized outlet.
Ask about:
- Whether the old SIM is fully deactivated
- Time needed for the new SIM to activate
- Any balance or plan transfer rules
Account security
- Change passwords for email, banking, and social apps that used SMS recovery.
- Review recent login alerts.
- Contact banks if you receive unexpected OTP requests.
After replacement, test that OTPs arrive on the new SIM before relying on it for critical accounts.
Verification after replacement
Confirm the new SIM is correctly registered in your name using official channels. Guides: Owner Verification Overseas Pakistanis, CNIC SIM Check.
